Knox Plantation

An old plantation forest sitting quietly in the Lincolnshire countryside, Knox is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a rushed visit. The woodland here is dense enough to feel like you've stepped away from everything, with a decent network of paths threading through mature trees - it's properly peaceful on a weekday morning.

You're looking at a solid hour or two of walking depending on which routes you take. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are the smart choice. There's nothing flashy about Knox - no visitor centre, no café, no interpretive boards telling you what you're looking at. It's just woodland, which is exactly why it works. Families with older kids who actually enjoy a forest walk will find plenty to occupy them; younger ones might get restless.

Historically it's worth noting as working managed forestry land, though you don't need to be a tree expert to enjoy it. The main value here is the escape factor - it's close enough to Grantham for a morning trip but feels genuinely remote. Free to access, no facilities on-site, and the fewer people who know about it the better. Perfect if you want to avoid the honeypot attractions.
