Lan Wood

Dense ancient woodland spreads across the hillside just outside Whitland, offering proper Welsh forest walking without the crowds you'll find at better-known spots. Lan Wood feels genuinely wild - oak, ash and birch create a proper canopy overhead, while muddy paths wind between moss-covered stones and fallen logs.

Dog walkers and families looking for a decent ramble will find plenty to occupy them here. The terrain's varied enough to keep kids interested, though you'll want sturdy footwear as it gets properly boggy after rain. No marked trails as such, but that's half the appeal - you can strike off in any direction and lose yourself for an hour or two.

Expect to have the place largely to yourself, especially on weekdays. It's free to wander (as far as I could tell), and there's roadside parking near the entrance. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly, though you could easily spend a morning here if the weather's decent.

For families staying at nearby Parkdean Resorts Pendine Sands or the various camping spots around Whitland, it makes a lovely contrast to beach days. The woodland's particularly atmospheric in autumn when the leaves turn, though spring's equally rewarding when the bluebells emerge. Just don't expect facilities - bring your own water and snacks.
