Langton Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire sounds grander than it actually is, but that's rather the point. Langton Hill, near Horncastle, tops out at just 168 metres - barely a hill by most standards, yet it commands proper views across the flat fenlands that make up so much of this county. On a clear day you can see for miles, which is saying something when you're standing on what amounts to a gentle rise.

The walk itself is straightforward and works brilliantly for families who want a bit of fresh air without the scrambling. There's something satisfying about reaching the highest point in your county, even if you're not exactly gasping for breath when you get there. History types will appreciate that this spot has been important since Saxon times - it's marked on old maps as a significant landmark for navigation across otherwise featureless terrain.

You'll want to allow an hour or so, including time to take in the views properly. It's free to visit, naturally, and best tackled when the weather's on your side - grey drizzle rather defeats the purpose. Spring and autumn give the clearest skies.

If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Lincolnshire Glamping, The Layby Lincs, or Woodthorpe Leisure Park are all within six miles - it makes for a sensible half-day excursion. Horncastle itself has market charm and decent pubs, so combine the two and you've got a proper day out. Don't expect drama. Do expect honest, open countryside and the satisfaction of having literally reached the top of Lincolnshire.
