The estate spreads across 450 acres of mixed woodland and grassland just outside Horncastle, and it's the sort of place that creeps up on you. You're not walking around manicured gardens or following a prescribed trail - instead, you're genuinely exploring working countryside that happens to be a nature reserve run by the Wildlife Trust.

What you'll find depends on the season, but the mix is proper diverse. Woodland glades suddenly open onto meadows. In spring, the bluebells are ridiculous. Birds are everywhere if you know what to listen for - buzzards, woodpeckers, the usual suspects - and the old estate buildings give the place some character. It's free to roam, though facilities are minimal, so come prepared.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not dramatic scenery - this is Lincolnshire, after all - but it's honest and unpretentious. Kids enjoy it if they're into a bit of exploring, though there's nothing specifically geared toward them. Allow two to three hours if you're doing it properly.

It works brilliantly as a half-day from any of the nearby glamping or camping spots. Lincolnshire Glamping is barely a mile away, making it ideal for a morning walk before breakfast or an evening wander. Oxcombe Campsite is also close by. The landscape connects nicely with a broader Lincolnshire loop - Horncastle itself is worth a look for its Georgian high street and the River Bain. Come outside peak season when it's genuinely quiet.
