Lincoln Museum

Lincoln's museum sits right in the heart of the city, and it's the kind of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick dash through. You're looking at the town's story told through objects - Roman finds, medieval bits, industrial heritage - all housed in what used to be the Usher Gallery building. It's genuinely well done, and the staff clearly know their stuff.

History buffs will get the most from it. There's serious material here on Roman Lincoln (Lindum Colonia was no small settlement), and the medieval period when the place was genuinely important. If you've got kids in tow, they won't be bored for hours, but there's enough to keep them engaged for a solid afternoon, especially if you pick out a few sections rather than trying to see everything.

The museum is free to get in, which is proper value. Allow a couple of hours if you're thorough, less if you just want the highlights. Timing-wise, weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends.

It works well as part of a Lincoln break - the cathedral's a ten-minute walk away, and the castle grounds are close by too. If you're basing yourself at Hartsholme Country Park or South Cliff (both excellent, just a few miles out), you can pop into the city centre easily. Hanworth Country Park and Langdale Lakes are a bit further but still manageable for a day trip. Lincoln's compact enough that you can pack quite a lot in without feeling rushed.
