Lintzgarth Fell Nature Reserve

The moorland around Bishop Auckland feels proper wild once you get up onto Lintzgarth Fell. It's a nature reserve run by the Philip Wayne Upland Trust, and honestly, it's the kind of place that rewards a bit of legwork. You won't find manicured paths or interpretation boards here - this is genuine upland terrain with heather, rough grassland, and the sort of views that stretch right across County Durham when the weather plays ball.

What you're looking at is a working moorland reserve where the focus is on conservation rather than visitor facilities. The fell itself is open country, so you can wander where you fancy, picking your way through the heather. It's excellent for serious walkers and birders - you'll spot curlews and grouse if you're quiet enough. The reserve sits at decent height, so it's never claustrophobic, but it does mean the weather can turn quickly.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Westgate or White House & Hagg Bridge are closest, both within a few miles of Bishop Auckland - this works as a proper half-day walk rather than a drive-by visit. Allow at least two hours if you want to do it justice. Kids might find it a bit bleak and featureless unless they're already keen walkers. It's free to access, and you'll likely have the place largely to yourself, which is either brilliant or lonely depending on your mood. Best visited between late summer and autumn when the heather colours up.
