Little Dodd

Little Dodd doesn't sound like much - and frankly, it isn't. At 356 metres, this modest Northumberland fell is barely a bump compared to its higher neighbours, but that's rather the point. The walk up from Hexham takes a couple of hours there and back, gaining just enough height to feel like proper climbing without the full commitment of the bigger peaks nearby.

What you get is a straightforward ridge walk with decent views across the North Tyne Valley. On a clear day you can see well enough to understand the landscape properly. The fell itself is grassy and rounded - no dramatic rock or exposed ridges to get the adrenaline going, but that means it's fine for walkers who want a genuine bit of exercise without technical bits or exposure.

This is one for people who actually enjoy walking rather than ticking boxes. You won't find hordes here. Kids from about age eight upwards will manage the ascent fine, though younger ones might find it tedious - there's not much to look at until you reach the top. On a wet day it can be boggy underfoot.

If you're staying at one of the glamping spots nearby - Wild Northumbrian Tipis or GlamPods are closest - Little Dodd makes a solid morning outing. Pair it with a proper lunch in Hexham afterwards. It's not dramatic enough to justify a special trip on its own, but as part of a walking weekend in the North Pennines, it'll do nicely.
