The Dodd

The Dodd rises 502 metres above the surrounding moorland west of Hexham, offering one of the clearest viewpoints across the Northumberland hills if the weather cooperates. It's a proper walk rather than a gentle stroll - expect a steady climb through open moorland with minimal shelter, so come prepared for wind and changing conditions.

The summit itself is fairly spare. There's no café, no facilities, just you and the views stretching across to the Pennines on a clear day. History enthusiasts will appreciate the remoteness; Roman soldiers would have used these high routes to keep watch. Walkers get the most from this one. The views reward effort, but it's not dramatic in the Instagram sense - it's the raw, windswept Northumberland landscape that appeals.

Allow two to three hours for a circular route from the nearest parking. The ascent isn't technical but it's relentless, so families with young kids might find it frustrating rather than fun. Anyone accustomed to proper hill walking will find it satisfying and straightforward.

It works well as part of a broader walking holiday in the area.
