Heathery Buttocks

The name alone raises eyebrows, but Heathery Buttocks is a genuine fell in Northumberland, and it's a proper little walk worth doing if you're based around Hexham. The summit sits at a decent height without being punishing - you get genuine views across the moorland, and on a clear day the Pennines roll out rather nicely. It's the sort of walk that takes maybe two hours there and back from the car park, depending on your fitness and how often you stop to take photographs.

This is walkers' territory, pure and simple. Families with young kids might struggle with the boggy patches and the exposed ridge in wind, but anyone comfortable with fell-walking will find it straightforward and rewarding. The heather gives it real character - purple in late summer, golden-brown in autumn. You won't find cafes or visitor facilities up there; it's just you and the moorland.

The nearby holiday parks - Wild Northumbrian Tipis and Yurts is closest at 4.6 miles, with Kielder Waterside and the Landal equivalent just beyond that - make decent bases for a week exploring this corner of Northumberland. Pair it with walks around Kielder Forest and days in Hexham town itself, and you've got a solid break.
