Long Cairn

The Long Cairn sits on moorland a few miles south of Hexham - a Neolithic burial mound that's been there for roughly 5,500 years. What you're looking at is a long, low heap of stones, perhaps 60 metres end to end, with a chamber built into the southern end where bodies were once laid to rest. It's the sort of place where you stand there thinking about Bronze Age funeral rites and genuinely feel the weight of time.

This isn't a reconstruction or a polished visitor attraction. There's no cafe, no interpretation boards explaining what you're seeing. You turn up, find it on the moor, and work it out yourself - which is precisely why it works. The landscape around it matters as much as the stones themselves. You get proper views across Northumberland's rolling country.

Walkers should absolutely make the detour. It's an easy enough walk from the nearest road, and combining it with other moorland rambles around Bellingham makes for a decent afternoon. History types will find it fascinating; kids might lose interest after twenty minutes unless they're genuinely into archaeology. Allow an hour if you're thorough, less if you're just passing through.

Stay at one of the nearby campsites - Wild Northumbrian Tipis is barely two miles away - and you're perfectly placed for a proper exploration of Northumberland's ancient sites without being glued to Hexham town itself.
