Lizard Wireless Station

Marconi's wireless station sits on the Lizard Point, one of Cornwall's most windswept headlands, and it's genuinely moving to stand where the first transatlantic radio signal was received in 1901. The National Trust runs a small museum in the restored Victorian buildings, and you get a proper sense of how revolutionary this technology was - the exhibits explain the engineering without being dull, and the original mast location is marked out on the clifftop.

It's best suited to history enthusiasts and anyone curious about how communication changed the world. Kids aged ten upwards will engage with it; younger ones might find it a bit text-heavy and want to head straight back outside. Allow 45 minutes to an hour, though the real draw is the walk around the headland itself - the views across to Mullion Cove and beyond are exceptional, and that's free whether you visit the museum or not.

Admission is free (National Trust members will appreciate this), and it's open April to October, midday to three o'clock weekdays. The best time to visit is mid-morning when it's less crowded and the light's good for photographs. Henry's Camp Site sits just 0.7 miles away, making it ideal if you're basing yourself here for a few days exploring the Lizard Peninsula. The Secret Garden Glamping, a six-mile drive towards Helston, offers a quieter alternative if you want to visit without the caravan site atmosphere.
