Pistil Meadow

Just outside Helston, Pistol Meadow is a proper bit of Cornwall that most visitors sail right past. It's a wildflower meadow - and yes, that sounds duller than it actually is - with the kind of open views across the Lizard Peninsula that make you understand why people move here and never leave.

Walking through in late spring or early summer, you'll find it thick with native flowers: ragged robin, betony, and if you're lucky, some rarer orchids. It's the sort of place where you notice the light changes every twenty minutes and the wind keeps you honest. The meadow slopes gently, and from certain spots you can clock the moorland rolling away south toward Kynance Cove.

This works best for people who actually care about plants and landscape - it's not a tick-box attraction with crowds and ice-cream vans. If your family expects a play park or a gift shop, they'll get bored within fifteen minutes. But for walkers, photographers, and anyone fascinated by how real Cornish countryside looks when it hasn't been flattened into fields, it's worth the detour from Helston.

Given its proximity to Henry's Campsite - basically on your doorstep if you're staying there - it makes a sensible morning or evening walk during a park holiday. Allow an hour for a proper meander. There's no visitor infrastructure that I could find, so bring water and wear boots if it's been wet. It's free, naturally.
