Polpeor Cove

The walk down to Polpeor Cove catches most people off guard. You're expecting a gentle coastal stroll from Helston and instead you get a proper scramble down a narrow path with exposed tree roots and a fair bit of gradient - bring decent shoes. Once you're at the bottom, though, it's genuinely worth the effort. This is a working nature reserve tucked into the Cornish cliffs, and the thing that strikes you first is how quiet it feels. The cove itself is small and intimate, ringed by dark volcanic rock and dense scrub that's absolutely heaving with birds if you time it right. Binoculars are essential here - this place is serious about its wildlife. You'll spot razorbills, guillemots, and if you're lucky, peregrines cutting across the cliff face. The reserve runs a tight ship and rightly so - this isn't a place for beach balls and ice cream runs. It's for anyone who actually wants to observe nature rather than just photograph it. Allow a good hour and a half minimum because you'll want time to sit quietly and watch. The path is accessible year-round but spring and early summer are when the cliffs really come alive.
