Lloyd's Coppice

Walk into Lloyd's Coppice and you're immediately swallowed by a proper working woodland - this isn't a manicured nature reserve, it's the real deal. Ancient oak and coppiced hazel crowd the paths near Coalbrookdale, and the trees feel genuinely old in the way that matters. The undergrowth is thick, mossy in places, and after rain the whole place smells of damp earth and rot in the best possible way.

It's a short woodland walk rather than a major expedition. Most people manage the main paths in 45 minutes to an hour, though you can easily lose yourself for longer if you're the type to stop and look at things. There's genuine history here - this corner of Shropshire was at the heart of the Industrial Revolution, and walking through these coppices where locals would have harvested wood for centuries brings that weight into sharp focus.

Families with kids over eight will find it worthwhile; younger ones might find it a bit samey after a while since there's no dramatic viewpoint or destination. Walkers and anyone into woodland ecology will get more mileage from it. The paths can be muddy and root-strewn, so proper boots aren't optional.
