Longhowes Plantation

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Longhowes Plantation sits just outside York and delivers exactly what you'd expect from a coniferous forest - tall trees, quiet paths, and that particular smell of pine needles underfoot. There's nothing fancy here, which is rather the point. You come to walk, breathe deeper than usual, and let the kids burn off energy without worrying they'll run into a queue or a gift shop.

The plantation works best as a leg-stretcher between other activities. An hour's loop through the trees is entirely doable, though there's nothing here that'll hold your attention for longer than that. Families with young children get the most from it - the paths are relatively easy and forgiving, and there's genuine pleasure in that age group spotting woodland creatures or collecting interesting pinecones. Serious walkers might find it a touch underwhelming on its own terms.

Come in winter when the understory is clearer and visibility better, or spring if you want the slight chance of spotting bluebells. Summer can feel a bit gloomy and airless under the dense canopy. It's free to access, which counts in its favour.

If you're staying at Bugththorpe Grange or Yapham Holds - both glamping spots within a few miles - Longhowes makes a sensible morning walk before heading into York proper for lunch. Don't expect magic, but do expect fresh air and a genuine escape from the town.
