Low Slitt Mine Pond

A former mining pond just outside Bishop Auckland that's turned into something rather lovely for a quiet afternoon walk. Low Slitt Mine Pond sits tucked away in the Durham countryside, the water reflecting moorland sky and surrounded by rough grass and the occasional stunted tree. It's the sort of place that appeals to people who actually like ponds - birdwatchers, landscape photographers, anyone after a bit of solitude without much effort.

The walk itself is gentle and straightforward, taking maybe 20 to 30 minutes depending on how much you linger by the water's edge. There's industrial history lurking just beneath the surface here, a reminder that this corner of County Durham was properly worked over by coal mining, though nowadays you'd never know it from the reedy banks and the silence. Kids under about eight might find it a touch dull if they're after something with more action, but older children and teenagers hunting for newts or wanting to sit quietly will get on fine.

Being free and requiring no formal entry, it works brilliantly as a stop-off during a wider exploration of the area. It's only a short drive from Westgate Caravan & Camping Site if you're based there, and pairs well with walking routes across the wider Durham countryside. Spring and early summer are best - the light's kinder then, and you've more chance of spotting wildlife. Go mid-week if possible. Weekends can feel a bit busier than somewhere this small really deserves.
