Lower Long Churn Cave

Crawling into Lower Long Churn Cave feels like stepping backwards in time, though you'll want proper torches and a decent sense of adventure to make the most of it. This is caving, proper caving - not a lit tourist attraction with gift shops. The entrance opens up into a series of passages and chambers carved by water over thousands of years, and the whole thing has that slightly eerie, utterly fascinating atmosphere you only get underground.

It's located near Carnforth in North Yorkshire, tucked into limestone country that's made for this sort of thing. The cave itself is free to explore, but you'll need to be reasonably fit and comfortable in tight spaces - some passages narrow considerably, and the floor can be muddy and slippery depending on recent rainfall. Most people allow an hour to two hours, though determined cavers with proper equipment stay considerably longer.

The surrounding limestone landscape is cracking for walking, so consider pairing this with exploration of the broader Dales. Go in good weather and tell someone where you're headed.
