Lower Tatham Wood

Thick woodland with a proper forest floor - moss, fallen logs, the works - Lower Tatham Wood sits just inland from Carnforth and feels genuinely remote despite being accessible. It's the sort of place where you notice birdsong immediately once you've stepped past the car park. The trees are ancient enough to make you feel small, and the paths wind through dense undergrowth that changes character depending on which route you take.

Walkers will get the most from this. There's no visitor centre or fancy facilities, just woodland as it is - muddy in winter, carpeted in ferns come summer. An hour's ramble is perfectly doable, though you could easily spend two or three if you're the type to stop and watch things. Kids either love it or get bored fast, depending on whether they're into exploring; it's not a playground situation.

Free to access, which is always welcome. Wear proper boots though - the ground can be boggy and uneven. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying at Fell End Holiday Park nearby, adding a bit of proper woodland into an otherwise coastal-focused holiday. The proximity to Carnforth means you can combine it with visits to the wider Lancashire landscape without losing much driving time. Go mid-week in autumn if you want the place to yourself.
