Mam Ratagan

The drive up to Mam Ratagan is half the appeal - a proper switchback climb that leaves you clinging to the steering wheel. You're ascending from Kyle into the Highlands, and the road gets progressively more entertaining as the valley floor drops away beneath you. Park at the top and you're standing 300 metres above sea level looking out across Loch Duich and the Five Sisters of Kintail. On a clear day the view sweeps west toward Skye; on a misty one it's all atmospheric drama. The viewpoint itself is straightforward - no visitor centre, no café, just a pull-in with views that do the talking. Allow 20 minutes to soak it in properly, longer if you want to walk the nearby paths through the corrie. Families with younger kids might find the actual stopping point a bit exposed and windy, though the walk up from Glenshiel Campsite - just 2.3 miles away - makes a decent morning outing if you're based there. The campers are well positioned for this one. Walkers will find the Ratagan switchback road itself something of a pilgrimage, but it's the view at the top that justifies the detour rather than any lengthy hiking. Worth the drive from Kyle, but don't expect wilderness solitude - it's a popular stop.
