Marshall's Grove

A proper woodland walk near Ross-on-Wye, Marshall's Grove is the sort of place that rewards a lazy afternoon without demanding much effort in return. The trees here are mature and densely packed - oak, beech, and the odd bit of silver birch - and there's enough shade that even on a warm day it stays cool underfoot. You'll find a network of paths threading through, some well-trodden, others quieter if you fancy wandering off the main drag.

Historically it's linked to the Marshall family estates in the area, though there's not much interpretation on site, so if you're after plaques and heritage info you might be disappointed. That said, there's something rather nice about not being lectured - you just walk, listen for woodpeckers, and let your mind wander.

It's ideal for a couple of hours if you're staying at Broadmeadow Caravan Park nearby - close enough to pop to without overthinking it, far enough from Ross-on-Wye's high street to feel like proper countryside. Families with reasonably mobile kids will manage fine, though there's nothing particularly thrilling for younger ones, so don't expect sustained enthusiasm past the midway point.

Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - bring your own water and check conditions after heavy rain, as it can get muddy. Spring and early summer are best for bluebells and general atmosphere, though honestly it's pleasant enough year-round if you're not fussy about wet boots.
