Melton Playing Fields

Just outside Woodbridge, Melton Playing Fields is a proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured visitor attraction - which is rather the point. You'll find grassland, scrub, and wetland habitat that shifts with the seasons, managed to encourage everything from ground-nesting birds to small mammals and insects. There's no visitor centre or cafe, no admission charge. It's the kind of place you walk through or sit quietly in if you know what you're looking for.

Walkers and birdwatchers get the most from it, particularly between spring and autumn when breeding activity peaks. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will enjoy it; younger ones might find it a bit low-key. Allow an hour or so, longer if you've brought binoculars and a field guide.

The reserve sits conveniently close to several holiday parks - Woodbridge Glamping is barely ten minutes away on foot, and Moat Barn Touring Caravan Park offers a proper base if you're planning a longer Suffolk break. It pairs well with exploring Woodbridge itself, which has genuine character along its riverside, or pushing further into the Rendlesham Forest area. The walking is undemanding and the habitat quietly rewarding if you take time to look properly. Not spectacular, but worth half a morning if you're in the neighbourhood.
