Melton Woods

Ancient beech trees tower overhead as you follow the winding paths through this proper bit of Suffolk woodland, just a stone's throw from Woodbridge. Melton Woods feels refreshingly wild after the manicured gardens and tourist spots dotted around the county - this is proper rambling territory where you might actually get your boots muddy.

Families with energetic children will find plenty to explore here, though bring wellies if it's been wet. The paths can be a bit rough underfoot, so it's not ideal for pushchairs or anyone with mobility issues. Dog walkers absolutely love the place - there's enough space for proper off-lead fun without worrying about traffic.

What makes this woodland special is how genuinely untamed it feels. You won't find interpretation boards or waymarked trails, just good old-fashioned exploring among the trees. The canopy creates lovely dappled light on sunny days, and in autumn the colours are cracking.

Allow a couple of hours for a decent walk, longer if you've got children who want to build dens or hunt for interesting sticks.
