Middleroom Wood

The woodland walk through Middleroom Wood near Chard is one of those proper Somerset secrets that locals guard quietly. You're walking through dense beech and oak, the kind of place where light filters through in golden shafts and the path is soft underfoot from decades of fallen leaves. It's not a destination that screams spectacle, but that's rather the point.

The wood itself is unremarkable in the best way - no visitor centres, no marked trails with laminated signs, just a straightforward ramble through working woodland. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it can get muddy after rain so proper boots matter. Walkers who prefer solitude over crowds will absolutely love it; you'll barely see anyone else. History types might find the woodland ecology interesting rather than the heritage side of things.

Allow an hour or two depending on which paths you take. There's no entrance fee that we're aware of, and no formal opening hours - it's the sort of place you can visit whenever suits. It works perfectly as a morning or afternoon break if you're based at Dimpsey Shepherd's Hut Glamping just down the road, which is genuinely lovely if you're after a bit of countryside luxury. The wood fills in a gap nicely between exploring Chard itself and heading towards the broader Blackdowns walking country. Worth the detour if you're in the area and fancy actual woodland rather than manicured parkland.
