Milecastle 47 (Chapel House)

You're standing on a windswept Northumberland hillside looking at what amounts to a Roman fortress reduced to knee-high rubble. Milecastle 47, also called Chapel House, is one of the small fortlets that punctuated Hadrian's Wall every Roman mile - hence the name. What you actually see is the outline of the walls, ditches, and gateways, which takes real effort to visualise as a functioning structure. It's free to wander round, open year-round, and takes about twenty minutes unless you're the type who sits down with a reconstruction drawing and a packed lunch.

History buffs will find this genuinely rewarding. Archaeologists have done proper work here, and the layout is clearer than at many similar sites. Walkers absolutely love it - the setting on the Wall's route between Haltwhistle and Greenhead is spectacular, with views across the Tyne Valley that make the climb worthwhile. Kids under twelve might find it a bit abstract without a guide; the stones don't tell stories by themselves.

The site sits perfectly within a longer Hadrian's Wall walk, and there are three solid camping options within easy reach. Hadrian's Wall Campsite is closest at just over five miles and has the highest rating. Herding Hill Farm offers glamping if you fancy something less austere, whilst Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site is the budget option and still excellent. The combination - a morning at Milecastle 47, lunch in Haltwhistle, and an afternoon exploring other Wall sections - makes a proper day out.
