The Muirshiel Visitor Centre sits at the heart of a proper working landscape in Renfrewshire, where the Southern Uplands start to show their teeth. Families will manage the gentler routes round the visitor facilities, though anything serious requires proper boots and a reasonable level of fitness - this is moorland walking, not a stroll. Serious walkers come for the Upland terrain and the views across to the Firth. On a clear day you can see further than seems possible.

It's free to turn up and use the facilities, and worth allowing a couple of hours minimum if you're going anywhere beyond the immediate area. The nearest base, Lochwinnoch, is close by.
