National Trust - Gunby Estate, Hall and Gardens

You drive inland from Skegness through flat Lincolnshire farmland and suddenly there's this red-brick Georgian manor, all symmetrical and proper, surrounded by proper gardens that someone has actually cared for. Gunby Estate is a National Trust property - so yes, you'll pay for entry - and it's the sort of place that rewards a proper visit rather than a quick look-round.

Inside, the hall itself is genuinely interesting. It's the kind of house where you can see how people actually lived, not a roped-off museum piece. The rooms have character, the furnishings tell stories, and there's none of that suffocating silence you get at some country estates. The gardens are the real draw though. They're substantial without being overwhelming - walled gardens, woodland walks, proper old-fashioned herbaceous borders that look different depending on the season you visit.

Walkers will get a good afternoon out of it. The estate grounds are generous enough to justify a proper ramble, and it's open countryside so you can breathe. History types will appreciate the building itself and the layers of ownership. Children might find the house itself a bit slow unless they're genuinely interested in period rooms, but the gardens and grounds give them space to run about.

Give yourself two to three hours minimum. Go mid-week if you can - weekends get busy with coach tours. It sits nicely between the caravan parks ringing Skegness and Mablethorpe, making it a proper alternative to another afternoon on the beach. Definitely worth the detour if you're staying in the area for a week.
