New Piece Wood

The woodland paths at New Piece Wood offer a proper escape from the tourist crowds that clog up Bakewell town centre. This is straightforward forest walking - Douglas firs and native broadleaves, well-maintained trails, nothing fancy. It's the sort of place you'd spend ninety minutes wandering without a map, poking around between the trees and letting the kids run off some energy.

For families based at Knotlow Farm Caravan & Campsite just down the road, it's an easy leg-stretch without the hike commitment. The paths are manageable for pushchairs if you're not fussy about the terrain, though muddy after rain - bring appropriate boots. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so pack what you need.

Historically it's unremarkable - just working woodland - but that's partly what makes it refreshing. No interpretation boards, no staged moments, just trees. Walkers will appreciate the quiet. Photography types less so, unless you're into moody grey-skies woodland shots.

The real draw is proximity to Bakewell itself, about twenty minutes' drive. If you've got a day in the area, combine this with a proper walk towards Monsal Dale or the Wye Valley, then grab coffee back in town. New Piece Wood works as a warm-up, not the main event. Late autumn or early spring are best - fewer midges, clearer sightlines through the branches.
