New Rift Pot

Water disappears into the ground here - that's the whole point of New Rift Pot. It's a proper sinkhole near Carnforth where a stream vanishes underground into limestone, and you can actually follow where it goes if you're willing to get wet and muddy.

The cave itself isn't vast or fancy. What you get is a short walk to the entrance, then the chance to scramble down and follow the stream passage as it cuts through the rock. It's the sort of place that appeals to anyone who finds geology genuinely interesting rather than just reading about it in a guidebook. Families with kids who like a proper adventure - not a tourist-polished stroll - will find it worth doing.

You'll need decent boots and don't mind water; this isn't something you do in trainers or on a warm day when you want to stay dry. Allow an hour at most, including getting there. It's free, which is brilliant, though you'll want a torch if you're venturing further in.

Where it fits into a park break is straightforward: Primrose Glamping Pods is barely two miles away, making this a solid morning activity before heading back for lunch. The limestone country around here is riddled with these features - it's proper karst landscape - so if New Rift Pot grabs you, there's more exploring to be done in the area.
