Historically speaking, nothing particularly dramatic happened here, so if you're after crumbling ruins or medieval intrigue you'd be better off heading into Barnard Castle itself. But if you want genuine woodland atmosphere without the pretension, North Wood delivers. It's the sort of place you visit not for a specific reason but because you need air and quiet.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Thorpe Farm Centre is barely a mile away - this makes a straightforward afternoon addition to your itinerary. It won't consume a whole day, but it's free, accessible, and works well as a recovery walk after exploring the castle and market town proper. Come expecting nothing except trees, and you'll leave satisfied.
