Barnard Castle

Ancient Roman stones still mark the landscape here, where the River Tees carves through some of Durham's most dramatic countryside. This market town sits at the heart of Teesdale, surrounded by dense woodland and rolling fells that seem to stretch endlessly towards the Yorkshire Dales.

Barnard Castle itself feels properly lived-in rather than touristy. The medieval castle ruins overlook the river, while the town's cobbled streets wind past independent shops and traditional pubs. St. Mary's Church anchors the town centre, its Norman architecture a reminder of centuries of settlement here.

Venture beyond the town and you'll find yourself in walking territory that's second to none. Great Wood and Mill Wood offer excellent rambles, while the more adventurous can tackle Summerhouse Hill for cracking views across the dale. History buffs should definitely seek out Greta Bridge Roman Fort - it's a proper bit of ancient engineering that most visitors miss entirely.

The surrounding forests are magnificent. Jack Wood and North Wood provide perfect cover for wildlife spotting, and the network of footpaths means you can easily spend a full day exploring without retracing your steps. Rokeby Park adds a touch of grandeur to the mix, its landscaped grounds a lovely contrast to the wilder woodland.

Getting here couldn't be easier - the A66 runs right past, connecting you to both the M6 and A1. Darlington's your nearest major town, about 20 minutes east.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes absolute sense. You're perfectly positioned to explore both the town and the spectacular countryside, with Teesdale's best walking practically on your doorstep.
