Parc y Borth

Five minutes from Porthmadog's centre, this modest hill delivers views that punch well above its weight. The walk to Parc y Borth's summit is short but steep enough to get the blood pumping - proper Welsh terrain even at this manageable height. From the top, you'll look out over the Glaslyn estuary where the railway meets the sea, with Snowdonia's peaks forming a dramatic backdrop.

Families with older children will find this a good warm-up hike before tackling something more ambitious. The path can get muddy after rain, so decent boots are worth bringing. Takes about 45 minutes up and down if you're not hanging about.

What makes this spot worthwhile is how it connects with a holiday based around Black Rock Sands or one of the nearby caravan parks. After a morning on the beach at Black Rock Sands Touring and Camping Park, an afternoon climb here gives you a completely different perspective on the same coastline. The kids might grumble about leaving the beach, but they'll thank you for the view.

Come in clear weather if you can - the maritime location means clouds can roll in quickly and spoil the whole point of the exercise.
