Park Rough

A proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist spot, Park Rough sits just outside Canterbury and delivers exactly what it promises - rough forest with decent paths threading through dense Kent woodland. It's the sort of place you stumble upon when you're camping nearby at Nethergong or Dog & Duck Leisure Park, not somewhere you'd plan your entire holiday around, but absolutely worth an hour if you're in the area.

The forest itself is unremarkable in the best possible way. Ancient oaks, tangled undergrowth, the occasional muddy section that'll test your boots. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no numbered trail markers trying to tell you what tree you're looking at. You just walk, listen to it properly quiet, and occasionally remember why people bothered to preserve woodland in the first place. Families with younger kids might find it a bit dull after twenty minutes unless they're into den-building and spotting wildlife.

If you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Seaview is about five miles away, or Turners Folly Field if you fancy glamping - this makes a solid half-morning outing. Pair it with a proper wander around Canterbury itself and you've got a decent day sorted. Admission appears to be free, though there's no obvious visitor infrastructure, so go prepared with decent footwear and don't expect facilities. The ground can be boggy even days after rain, so it's not ideal if you're after a gentle amble.
