Paxton Church

A short drive south from Berwick-upon-Tweed sits Paxton Church, a proper little medieval survivor that most caravan tourists completely miss. The church itself is modest - stone-built, unpretentious - but that's exactly what makes it worth seeking out. You get the sense of stepping into centuries-old worship without the crowds or the heavy restoration work that's flattened the character out of so many English churches.

Inside, the atmosphere is genuinely quiet. Low ceilings, worn stone, a few decent memorials if you're into that sort of thing. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which feels like a luxury these days. The walk from the car park takes minutes, making it an easy stop between exploring the Berwick area proper and your caravan base.

Walking types and history enthusiasts will get more from this than families with restless kids, if I'm honest. There's not much interactive about it - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards - so under-tens will get bored within ten minutes. But if you're staying at Chainbridge, just 1.5 miles away, or any of the other parks clustered around Berwick, it's a worthwhile detour on a quiet afternoon. Free to visit, open and unlocked most days. Allow 20 minutes, maybe longer if you're the sort to linger over old gravestones. It won't dominate your holiday, but it's the kind of small discovery that makes a North East break feel less scripted.
