Peascliff Plantation

Walk into Peascliff Plantation and you're immediately surrounded by tall conifers that block out most of the sky - it's properly atmospheric, especially on a grey Lincolnshire afternoon. The woodland sits just outside Grantham and offers straightforward forest walking with a decent network of paths that won't have you backtracking or getting hopelessly lost.

It's the sort of place that appeals most to walkers after a proper stretch rather than families looking for a themed afternoon out. The trees are dense enough that you could easily spend an hour here without seeing another soul, which might be exactly what you're after. Kids will tolerate it for a while but there's no playground nonsense or interpretive boards to hold their attention - just woodland and quiet.

You'll want sturdy boots if it's been wet, as the ground gets boggy in places. The plantation isn't a long detour from Grantham itself, making it a decent addition to a park-based holiday in the area. Wagtail Country Park is less than two miles away, so you could easily combine the two - an hour in the woodland, then head to the park for amenities and a coffee.

There's something genuinely restorative about walking among those tall conifers. It's not dramatic or showy, but it gets the job done. Best visited when you've got time to dawdle rather than dash through.
