Pen y Grib

The walk up Pen y Grib rewards you with views that stretch across the Black Mountains towards Brecon. It's a proper hill rather than a mountain - about 658 metres - but don't let that fool you into thinking it's a gentle stroll. The path from Crickhowell climbs steeply through woodland before opening out onto moorland with that exhilarating sense of exposure you get on a decent ridge.

What you actually do here is walk. There's no cafe, no visitor centre, no interpretation boards - just you, the views, and the wind if you're unlucky. On a clear day the vista spreads out in every direction: the Wye Valley opens up beneath you, and if visibility's good you'll spot the Sugar Loaf and Table Mountain nearby. Most people take two to three hours from Crickhowell town centre and back, depending on fitness and how long you linger at the top.

This one's for walkers with a bit of stamina and clear weather ambitions. Families with older kids who don't mind a proper climb will manage it fine. Casual strollers won't get much from it - there's no interest halfway and the exposed sections aren't for the nervous.

If you're based at Cwmdu Campsite or Bryndu Caravan - both within easy striking distance - you've got a solid half-day expedition. Pair it with lower-level walks in the valley, and you've got a proper hill country break sorted. Bring a map and decent boots. Phone signal is patchy up top.
