Pewley Hill

The climb up Pewley Hill rewards you with proper Surrey views - rolling countryside that stretches toward the South Downs on a clear day. It's a modest peak by any measure, but that's rather the point. The walk itself takes about thirty minutes from the nearby town, threading through woodland before opening onto grassland with the kind of vistas that make you understand why people settle in this corner of England.

You won't find much infrastructure here - no cafe, no visitor centre, no gift shop trying to sell you miniature chalk horses. What you get is space, air, and the chance to actually think. Walkers love it for that reason. Families with younger kids might find the ascent a bit of a slog without a payoff big enough to justify the whinging, though teenagers keen on countryside walking will take it in their stride.

The whole trip - up, around, back down - runs to about ninety minutes at a leisurely pace. Spring through autumn is your window; winter rain turns the paths into mud runs. Free, obviously, as is the view.

If you're camping at Chantry Wood or any of the parks scattered across the Surrey Hills - Edgeley, Wyldecrest, Chapel Farm - Pewley Hill makes a solid morning or late-afternoon outing. It's close enough that you won't waste a chunk of your holiday driving, but far enough from the campsites to feel like proper countryside. Combine it with a walk down to the nearest town and you've got a proper day sorted.
