Pinal Wood

The woodland floor at Pinal Wood is properly thick with leaf litter - the kind that muffles your footsteps and makes the whole place feel separate from the world. It's a small forest tucked near Hungerford in Berkshire, and while it won't take you hours to explore, it's exactly the sort of spot that rewards a quiet morning walk.

You get mixed broadleaf woodland here - oak, beech, and plenty of undergrowth that changes character with the seasons. Spring brings bluebells in decent numbers. Autumn is when it's at its best, honestly - the canopy turns properly golden and the paths are lined with mushrooms. There's no formal trail system that I could find, so you're picking your own way through, which some people love and others find a bit aimless.

It's best suited to woodland walkers rather than families after a big day out - there's no playground, no facilities, no café. Bring decent boots if it's been wet. The nearest proper amenities are in Hungerford itself, a few minutes' drive away.

If you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm just down the road, this makes a nice half-hour detour on a clear morning. Don't expect dramatic views or heritage structures. What you get is quiet, oxygen, and the kind of solitude that's increasingly hard to find. Whether that's worth your time depends entirely on whether you're after that sort of morning.
