Pint Pot

The cave entrance is modest - you'd walk straight past it if you weren't looking. Pint Pot is a proper sinkhole cave tucked into the limestone landscape near Carnforth, and it's the kind of place that rewards a bit of effort to find. The walk in takes you through typical Yorkshire moorland before you drop down into this natural chasm where water has carved through the rock over millennia.

It's not a vast cathedral of stone like some of the showier caves round here. The passage is tight in places, atmospheric throughout, and genuinely feels like you've discovered something rather than just turned up to a tourist attraction. If you're into caving or geology, this is worth the trip. Families with young kids might find it a bit cramped and cold - bring waterproofs and a decent torch. Hardcore walkers treating it as a pit stop on a longer route through the dales will get more from it than people expecting a polished visitor experience.

The practical stuff: it's free access and there's no formal opening times that I'm aware of. Allow maybe 45 minutes if you're just having a look round, longer if you're exploring properly. You'll want to check conditions before visiting - water levels matter for caving, and weather can make it treacherous. Staying at one of the nearby campsites like Philpin Farm or Ribblesdale Pods gives you a proper base for exploring this part of North Yorkshire. Pair it with walks round the wider limestone country and you've got a solid day out.
