Plymouth Brethren Christian Church

The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church sits quietly in Par, a working port town that most visitors rush through on their way to the Eden Project or the beaches beyond. It's a modest building, unassuming compared to the grand Victorian chapels you'll find elsewhere in Cornwall, but that's rather the point. The Brethren were always about substance over decoration - their faith expressed through simplicity rather than stained glass.

Unless you're specifically interested in Christian denominations and their architecture, this isn't a destination in itself. History enthusiasts and those researching nonconformist movements will find it interesting enough to photograph and note, but you won't spend more than fifteen minutes here. The building itself doesn't invite lingering, and there's no café or interpretation centre to extend a visit.

What works better is combining it with Par's actual draws - the working harbour, the coastal path walks heading towards Carlyon Bay, or pushing on to the Eden Project just up the road. If you're based at East Crinnis or Par Sands for a week, it's a five-minute detour while exploring the town on foot. The Brethren movement was significant in 19th-century Cornwall, so if you're the sort who enjoys spotting these small chapels while driving about, add it to your list. Otherwise, Par's beaches and the bigger attractions nearby will give you better value for your holiday time.
