Poacher's Folly

Deep in the Berkshire woodland near Hungerford sits Poacher's Folly, a Victorian-era structure that rises unexpectedly through the trees like something from a half-remembered folk tale. It's a proper curiosity - built as a shooting lodge, or so the story goes, though the exact details have blurred over time. The forest around it is what draws you in though: ancient oaks, beech trees, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how rare proper woodland silence has become.

Walkers will get the most out of this. It's not a manicured attraction with visitor facilities or gift shops - it's a genuine excuse to get properly lost in the forest and stumble upon something odd and interesting. You'll need sturdy boots and a bit of navigation sense. The folly itself is worth seeing up close, but the real reward is the walk itself through dense woodland that feels genuinely remote despite being within reach of Hungerford.

If you're staying at Lorne Hill Farm just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day outing. Allow a couple of hours to make the walk without rushing, find the structure, and soak in the atmosphere. Best visited in autumn or early spring when the forest floor isn't waterlogged and visibility through the trees is clearer. There's little point in summer when the dense canopy obscures much of the woodland character.

Bring a map or GPS - locals know it exists, but signposting is minimal. That's rather the point.
