Portrush Coastal Zone

The stretch of coast around Portrush hits different when you actually walk it. Golden sand backed by cliffs, rockpools that'll keep kids occupied for hours, and on a clear day the view across to Scotland feels almost close enough to swim to. You get proper wild Atlantic weather rolling in, which sounds grim until you see why it's shaped everything here - the rock formations, the way the light plays, the whole drama of it.

Walkers should budget at least a couple of hours to do the main coastal path justice. East Strand is the obvious starting point, and from there you can either head toward the harbour side or push toward White Rocks if the tide's out. The cliffs aren't Moher-scale impressive, but they've got character - weathered, honest, properly Northern Irish in that way. Families with younger kids will do fine on the beach itself, though they'll want to check tide times before mucking about in rockpools.

Best visited on a day when the weather's settled enough to actually see where you're going. October through March gets properly moody, which some people love and others find depressing. Summer's busier but the water's still bloody cold.

It slots well into a broader Causeway Coast run taking in the Giant's Causeway itself and Bushmills nearby. Free to access, though parking at the main beach can be tight during peak season.
