Portrush Harbour

The working harbour at Portrush pulls you straight into the reality of a proper seaside town. Fishing boats come and go, nets get mended, the smell of salt and diesel hangs in the air - it's nothing fancy, which is precisely the point. You can spend twenty minutes watching the boats or a couple of hours if you've got time to kill and a flask of coffee.

There's a small sandy beach right beside it, and the seafront promenade connects you to Portrush's amusement arcade and chip shops if you fancy the full seaside experience. The harbour works best on a clear day when you can see across to Inishowen in the distance. Grey weather gives it a moody, atmospheric quality that some find more interesting than sunshine.

Families with young kids won't spend long here on its own, but it's a natural stop if you're exploring Portrush itself - the town's main draw. Walkers and photography types will find more to engage with, especially at golden hour when the light hits the water properly. The whole thing is free and accessible whenever you fancy a look.

It sits nicely within reach of the Causeway Coast's bigger attractions - Giant's Causeway is only about ten minutes away towards Bushmills.
