Pump Plantation

A proper woodland walk through ancient forest near Coalbrookdale, Pump Plantation is the sort of place you'll stumble upon rather than plan for. The trees here have been standing for centuries, and you can feel it - there's a weight to the place that newer woods just don't have.

What you get is straightforward: forest trails winding between old growth, the occasional stream, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why people bother with countryside at all. It's not dramatic or showy. There are no viewpoints or visitor facilities to speak of, which means it stays properly peaceful even when other spots are rammed with families.

Walkers will get genuine mileage out of this - bring proper boots and give yourself at least two hours to explore properly without rushing. History types might appreciate the setting given Coalbrookdale's industrial heritage just next door, though Pump Plantation itself is more about the trees than the human story.

It's free, naturally, because there's nothing here that needs charging for. Families with young kids might find it a touch dull after an hour unless you're the sort who enjoy teaching them to identify trees. Teenagers? Absolutely not.

If you're staying at Lower Hill Campsite nearby, this is an excellent morning walk before heading into Coalbrookdale's museums and ironworks. Don't expect signposting or tourist infrastructure - that's rather the point.
