Ragleth Wood

Walking into Ragleth Wood from Church Stretton feels like stepping into something proper old-school - no visitor centres, no signs telling you which way to go, just woodland that's been here for centuries doing its thing. The paths wind through mixed woodland with plenty of mature trees, and on a clear day you get views across to the Long Mynd, which dominates the landscape around these parts. It's the kind of place where you genuinely feel like you've left the world behind, even though you're minutes from the town.

This is best for walkers who don't need hand-holding. Families with older kids who can handle uneven ground will find it excellent - there's a good hour's rambling available without needing to be particularly ambitious. Younger children might find it a bit relentless, though quieter paths do exist if you explore properly. The woodland floor can get boggy, especially after rain, so proper boots are non-negotiable.

The wood doesn't charge entry - it's just there, freely available to anyone who wants to use it. Early morning or weekday visits are noticeably quieter than weekends. Spring brings bluebells, which is worth timing for if you can.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots - Alderwood is genuinely excellent and only three miles away - Ragleth is an obvious morning walk before heading elsewhere. Combine it with the Long Mynd itself for a proper day out in this corner of Shropshire. It's not flashy, but it's real woodland walking without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots.
