Reed Wood

Walk into Reed Wood and you're immediately swallowed by tall conifers and the kind of quiet that makes you forget Battle is only a few miles away. It's a proper working forest rather than a manicured country estate, with dense stands of pine and fir that block out most of the sky. The paths are well-trodden and relatively easy to navigate, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet - the ground stays boggy in places.

This place works best for anyone after a straightforward woodland walk without the crowds you'd hit at the big tourist attractions. Families with primary-school kids will get a solid couple of hours out of it; teenagers might find it a bit samey unless they're the brooding nature type. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - the density of trees draws all sorts. History buffs won't find much here, but walkers who just want to disappear into trees for a bit will leave happy.

The forest feels genuinely local rather than packaged. There's no visitor centre or cafe, which is either brilliant or annoying depending on your mood. Come in autumn when the light filters through differently, or spring when things are growing again.

If you're based at Fontmills Farm Campsite or Horam Manor Country Park, Reed Wood makes a decent half-day detour. It's the kind of place where you won't feel rushed, and you can decide on the day whether you want an hour's stroll or a proper three-hour ramble. Well worth it if you're already in the area.
