Toll Wood

The forest floor here is thick with leaf litter and moss, the kind of place where you actually feel the quiet. Toll Wood, just outside Battle in Sussex, is a proper woodland walk rather than a manicured tourist spot - mostly beech and oak, with sections of dense undergrowth that look like they haven't changed much in decades.

It's the sort of place walkers genuinely enjoy. The paths are well-trodden but not overcrowded, and you can easily spend two to three hours wandering without feeling rushed. Kids will either love it or get restless after forty minutes depending on the type - there's no playground equipment or visitor centre, just trees and a bit of peace. That's rather the point.

Access appears to be free, though there's no official information readily available online, so it's worth checking locally in Battle before you head out. Early morning is best if you want solitude, though the woodland can be wet underfoot even days after rain given the clay soil.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Beech Estate is barely half a mile away - this makes a solid morning or afternoon walk without needing to travel far. It pairs well with a Battle visit (the 1066 battlefield museum and town are close by), and the forest gives you proper outdoor space between market town pottering. Don't come expecting Instagram moments. Come for air and headspace.
