Beech Wood

The beech trees here are proper specimens - tall, straight, and old enough that you feel like you're walking through something that's been standing since way before Battle became famous for its Norman conquest. Beech Wood is exactly what it says: a forest of mature beeches in Sussex, the kind of place you come to actually walk rather than tick off a list.

It's free to access and works brilliantly as a half-day outing if you're based at one of the nearby campsites. Beech Estate is barely a mile away, making it ideal for families who don't fancy long drives between their holiday park and a decent woodland ramble. The floor is carpeted with leaf litter and beech mast - soft underfoot and good for young walkers who get tired easily. In autumn it's genuinely lovely, though the canopy blocks enough light that the undergrowth stays sparse.

For actual walkers it's straightforward rather than dramatic. There's no visitor centre or marked trails that I'm aware of, so you need a bit of navigation sense or a map. It's not a destination you'd drive an hour for, but it's absolutely the place to spend a couple of hours if you're staying nearby - particularly at Crowhurst Park or Beaulieu Farm Campsite, both within cycling distance.

Kids aged six upwards will get something from it. Younger ones might find it a bit samey - it's woodland, not a theme park. The real appeal is simplicity: decent trees, fresh air, and genuine quiet. That's enough.
