Caldbec Hill

The walk up Caldbec Hill rewards you with views that stretch across the Weald - on a clear day you can see right across Sussex. It's a modest peak by any standard, but the surrounding countryside is proper lovely, and the walk itself is straightforward enough that families won't spend half the day trudging uphill.

There's nothing built on top - no café, no visitor centre, just you and the landscape. Some people find that brilliant; others might feel a bit let down. The real appeal is the walk itself through rolling farmland near Battle, and the chance to appreciate why this part of Sussex has mattered so much historically. You're standing roughly where events shaped the course of England, which adds a certain weight to the view, even if the peak itself is unassuming.

Allow an hour or so for a gentle climb and a breather at the top. It's free, obviously - there's no infrastructure to charge for. Go on a weekday morning if you want solitude, or after rain when the views tend to be clearest.

For a park-based holiday, it works well alongside stays at Beech Estate Campsite or Crowhurst Park, both within easy driving distance. It's the sort of walk you'd do while staying locally - not worth planning a trip around alone, but absolutely worth the detour if you're camping nearby. Pack a proper map though; the paths aren't always obvious on the ground.
