Reeve's Plantation

Walking into Reeve's Plantation feels like stepping into someone's private woodland - which, technically, you almost are. This is proper forestry rather than a manicured country estate: dense conifers and mixed woodland that's been left to grow wild around Lincoln, the kind of place where the path gets narrow and you lose sight of the outside world within minutes.

It's best for anyone after a genuine woodland walk without the tourist crowds. The trees are tall enough that even on grey Lincolnshire days, there's something atmospheric about it. You'll spot the occasional clearing, and if you're lucky, woodland birds and the odd deer. Families with older kids who don't need obvious attractions will do fine here - there's room to roam and a real sense of exploration, though younger children might get restless without waymarked trails or facilities.

The plantation works well as a morning or afternoon stop if you're based at somewhere like Spire View Meadow glamping site, just 5 miles away near Lincoln. It's genuinely free to access and completely car-dependent, so you'll need transport to get here. Allow a couple of hours if you want to do a proper circuit rather than just a quick loop.

Timing-wise, autumn's lovely here when the conifers mix with dying deciduous trees - you get proper colour. Winter's muddier than you'd think. Spring brings wildflowers if you know where to look. Real woodland rather than theme park forestry, which is exactly what it should be.
