Reston Scar

Limestone cliffs rise from the surrounding farmland like a natural fortress, giving Reston Scar its commanding presence over the Kent valley south of Kendal. This isn't Lakeland's most famous peak, but that's precisely its appeal - you'll likely have the summit views largely to yourself.

Walkers who fancy a proper climb without the crowds of Helvellyn or Scafell will find this a cracking alternative. The route up involves scrambling over limestone pavement and picking your way through scattered woodland, which keeps things interesting without being technically demanding. Allow three to four hours for the round trip from the nearest parking spots.

Families with older children who don't mind a bit of rough terrain will enjoy the adventure aspect, though this isn't one for pushchairs or very small legs. The summit rewards your efforts with sweeping views across to the Pennines and back towards the central fells - on a clear day you can pick out the Langdale Pikes.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Windermere like Fallbarrow or White Cross Bay, Reston Scar makes an excellent day out when you want to escape the tourist trail. The limestone scenery offers something completely different from the typical Lakeland slate and volcanic rock, and botanists will spot unusual plants thriving in the alkaline soil.
